Plate Rack Decorative Dish Display
As décor for a kitchen or dining area, many homeowners (and renters alike) choose to hang or display decorative plates. The best way to achieve this look is to purchase a plate rack. Plate racks can also be used to display or hang decorative tiles, pictures and other types of artwork as well.
There are several types of plate racks available:
Single plate rack hangers can either be ornate or quite simple. There are the spring loaded styles that simply clamp around a plate and are hung onto the wall. These types of plate racks are very subtle and basically go unnoticed so as to place the entire focus on the plate itself. This look usually looks best in a grouping of plates rather than alone unless the plate rack is hung on a small, thing piece of wall.
The single display plate rack sits on a counter or buffet or other surface and remembles a small easel. It may be very ornate or very basic.
The single display hanging plate rack holds one plate and like the standing model may either be very ornate with a wraught iron type of look both above and below the area where the plate is placed. This ornamentation acts as a sort of framing around the plate. The less ornate styles may only feature a small ledge with an edge that hold the plate in place and a simple hanging device that rises only slightly above the plate.
The multi plate rack can hold anywhere from two to 5 or 6 plates. Like other plate racks, it’s normally created from metal or wood and comes in some very different models. The metal style is usually either horizontally or vertically hung and has quite a bit of ornamentation. The wood styles resemble an open shelving unit with narrow shelves that may have grooves in which to stand the plate. The shelves are only approximately 2 to 3 inches in depth. The front of the unit may either be wide open with wood around the sides and top or may have a pane effect.
The flat dish plate rack stands on a counter or table or even inside a cabinet and hold plates that are stacked. The plate rack may have more than one tier so as to hold more than one stack of plates or to hold a plate of appetizers on each tier for entertaining. For open shelved kitchens, this style plate rack is a terrific addition to hold dishes without setting them directly on the shelves. When used for appetizers or desserts, they look great on a buffet surrounded by lower plates and serving bowls.
Plate racks are sold in home accessory stores as well as the housewares department in larger stores. They can also be found online where the best selection is offered. Expect to pay as low as $10 for smaller, simpler designs and as much as $150 for larger multiplate plate racks.
